LED and backlit mirrors

Edge finishes
- Rough cut — only for mirrors that sit entirely inside a frame
- Flat polish — a smooth, safe, squared edge; the usual choice for a frameless mirror
- Pencil polish — slightly rounded, softer to the touch
- Bevelled — angled band around the edge, 10–25 mm wide, for a decorative finish
Any mirror fixed without a frame should have polished edges. A rough-cut edge on an exposed mirror is a cut waiting to happen.
Fitting
We fix mirrors with a combination of mirror-safe adhesive and mechanical support — clips, a channel or a concealed cleat — because adhesive alone is not a safe long-term fixing for a large panel. Ordinary silicone must never be used on the back of a mirror: it attacks the silver backing and produces black creeping edges within a year or two. For bathrooms we leave the back ventilated so moisture cannot sit against the backing.

Care
Clean the mirror face with a soft cloth and glass cleaner, spraying the cloth rather than the mirror — liquid running down to the edge is what eventually damages the silvering. Never use an abrasive pad or an ammonia-heavy cleaner on the edges. If black spotting appears around the rim, moisture has reached the backing; the mirror itself cannot be repaired at that point, but improving bathroom ventilation will stop the same thing happening to its replacement.

Moisture has reached the silver backing at the edge. Spraying the cloth rather than the mirror, using mirror-safe adhesive and ventilating the room all prevent it.
What thickness should a bathroom or wardrobe mirror be?
Small bathroom mirrors are usually 4 mm or 5 mm. Larger wall mirrors and wardrobe shutters are better in 5 mm or 6 mm, because a thin large panel flexes and distorts the reflection. For a wardrobe shutter we also recommend safety backing film.
